Steampunk

In this story, I also tried to represent atmospheres, environments that I had seen before in movies, cartoons and that seemed perfect for this project.
Surfing on the internet I found the Steampunk and it was love at first sight!

“Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistictechnology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion,culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history.”(Wikipedia)

I discovered that this genre of fiction was perfect for the history we were building and that some of the cartoons and movies that I had seen and liked in my past life, were in many ways connected with it.

In which era should I set the story?

Luckily, my head is full of movie-scenes, cartoons and books I can use as reference points for this story. I chose the era between the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century because I like the clothing and the atmosphere of the period.

To look for iconological references I had to wander around Barcelona looking for libraries collecting books with castels,18th century country settings’ and clothes’ images and I surprisingly realised that library have a huge repertoire of books around clothing.

After a month fulled with emails between me and Andrea, we finally took a decision on which story had to be illustrate. We chose some features the story should have, then asked to Viorica to write it.

Once the first draft of the story was ready I started to work on the storyboard, in order to select the scenes to illustrate.

The story was too long, so Viorica agreed to cut some parts of the text to make it fit to the 1024px x 768px resolution, the most common one among the tablets on sale at the moment.

The very first draft of the storyboard contained 32 scenes, too many. After about two weeks there were only 17 scenes left and the interactions were ready to be done.

This first draft was realized on paper sheets first, then on pc, in a very schematic way, so that Andrea (developer) could better understand how the scenes looked like and what type of interactions he had to animate.

Viorica will now cut the story and I’ll start to work on a storyboard that is not just a bunch of vector lines on pc, but actually drawings on a paper.

“Storie scombinate per Matteo” is an illustrated book for children 7/8 years of age, conceived as a gift for a boy named Matteo. The project wasdeveloped through a long-distance collaboration: the illustrations were created in Barcelona, the texts in Reggio Emilia, the graphic layout in Palermo. The volume consists of 28 color pages in hardcover and was printed by the publishing house Qanat of Palermo.
